I’m fully aware that this might be the silliest concept I’ve come up with to date but, hear me out, there’s a story…
When I was a kid, my gramps’ grew a variety of items, one of them being peanuts. I have a vivid memory of my mind being completely blown that you could just grow peanuts out of the ground. I’m a city kid, what do you expect? He’d roast them up and we’d enjoy. I don’t think I was as thrilled with eating them as much as the process but that’s a kid for ya.
Cut to almost forty years later, long after he died and a year or two after my dad died. I was clearing out the shop when I came to the filing cabinet that had been in the exact spot for more than four decades. Clearing it out was heartbreaking. The deeper I got, the farther back in time I went until I got to the very bottom of the last drawer where I found an old brown paper bag with a small plastic container. I popped it open and found around a half dozen peanuts. Gramps’ peanuts. He would always save a handful for the next years crop but, after a few years of doing it, he stopped gardening altogether and so these sat…and sat…and sat.
My first thought was to try and grow my own peanuts but then I remembered that I’m not much of a gardener. What I’m decent at is taking a thing and turning it into another thing. Not necessarily a better thing, just a different thing.
