In Japanese mythology, the oni are powerful supernatural beings often depicted as horned ogres or demons, embodiments of both malevolence and divine justice. Originating from ancient folklore and Buddhist traditions, oni were once thought to be humans transformed by overwhelming anger, jealousy, or wickedness, condemned to guard the gates of hell or punish the corrupt. Despite their fearsome appearance — bulging eyes, sharp fangs, and fierce expressions — oni also carry an element of protection, warding off evil and misfortune.
